Below is a brief synopsis of our technology offerings:
The NCT (non-contact tonometer): This instrument is enduringly called “the puff of air machine” by all seasoned optometry patients. It quite literally puffs air at you. The technician lines up the machine, and when they hit the “bullseye” a tiny puff of air releases and and a camera gauges the indentation of the cornea as the air hits. This machine, even though often dreaded by patients, is an important aspect of optical health, and is done at almost ALL visits (follow ups and short visits included). Other versions of tonometry are often used, and include the Goldman and i-care or handheld tonometer.
The OPD III is known by the technicians as the “Jack of all trades”. It is utilized on 95% of all patients that walk through the door. It analyzes the front surface of the eye. Through wave-front technology the OPD III estimates a prescription for the patient. It can be used to determine the healing trends of surgical procedures, track Kerataconous changes, and provide simulated viewing conditions to aid in understanding diagnoses. As a patient, you look into the OPD III and see a dynamic image of a hot air balloon at the end of a rural highway. As you look at the balloon the machine adjusts lighting and focus and takes numerous readings, ending with a flash of blue light that creates a topographical image of your cornea. All of this gives your doctor an estimate of your lens prescription, as well as a surface image of your eye.
The OCT (ocular coherance tomography): This machine scans the eye with light and allows the doctor to analyze the different layers of the retina. It gives the doctor a cross section view of each layer (like a slice of cake) allowing for amazing internal analysis of many retinal diseases and defects. This machine is part of an annual comprehensive exam for anyone over age 40 or with any history of retinal defects. It also allows the doctor to measure the thickness of the cornea, and evaluate the fit of specialty contact lenses.
The Optomap Daytona is just a jazzed up version of our old and trusted Optomap machine. This machine enables the doctor to see the back of the eye where the retinal structure and optic nerve reside. The Daytona allows us to capture images with ease, and tracks changes from year to year without the hassle of dilating drops, for optimal patient comfort.
FDT Fields/ Humphrey Visual Fields screener: Both of these machines are used to analyze visual field perception. Every patient over age 10 is screened with one version or the other. Patients with special diagnoses will explore visual fields testing at a much deeper level, but to some extent every patient will experience a visual fields test during their comprehensive exam. The HVF (Humphrey) is used for patients on high risk medications, or patients with a history of macular degeneration, optic nerve defects including glaucoma, and history of strokes, brain injuries, tumors etc.
The Diopsys Nova is a state of the art system that maps a person’s visual pathways to the brain. With this testing equipment, our Doctors can track changes in macular degeneration, glaucoma, ambliopia, brain injuries and more.
